This book is well-written and scholarly (116 different reference sources!). It is also quite old, written in 1982. Although the nuclear arms race has faded from the forefront of our concerns, it is still a valid pressing question, and, unfortunately, nuclear war is still a concern as the UN investigates the nuclear capabilities of countries such as Iran and North Korea. This book was written during the Cold War with the USSR and much of it is geared towards the possibility of nuclear war with Russia. As a result, it also provides an interesting insight into that time in history. Nevertheless, a few of the suggestions made by the authors are still reasonable and relevant. The book is divided into 3 parts: the nuclear arms race, the new buildup, and the way out.
