This is an interesting series about civilization after a nuclear holocaust wiped out most of the earths population. It is hundreds of years before this story begins so you are left to put what happened together from hints in the story. It is set in a military oriented feudal society, with any sort of technology being anathema to the common people - to the point where the religion preaches against it. People who have no genetic aberrations in their family are also held to be of higher blood then those born deformed from the radiation. It is a good story, but based on upper elementary / junior high / teen levels rather than adult so it is fairly short. The author also wrote the Tripod series.
