Another excellent Anne Perry mystery. I never get tired of her! If you're looking for a new author, and you like murder mysteries, you can never go wrong with Anne Perry. I'm no prude, and a few curse words won't make me quit an author, but it is so refreshing to read a good, intelligently written novel that doesn't need cursing in the dialogue, or explicit descriptions of gore to describe a murder. I also really like the time period that Anne Perry's books are set in, when telephones were a new invention, but streetlamps were still gaslit, when Oscar Wilde was a popular author and ladies still went 'visiting.' I would have liked to have lived in that period, and following Thomas and Charlotte Pitt almost makes me feel I'm there!

Anne Perry is unparalleled as a writer of mysteries, and her knowledge of Victorian England is prodigious. Most fascinating is that she takes very real societal issues/problems, some of which exist today, and weaves them into the fabric of her stories.
Most interesting to me is that Anne Perry actually was involved in a murder as a young girl in England and spent time in detention for the crime.

The issue of women's rights pervades Inspector Thomas Pitt's tenth adventure in late 19th-century London. Three Members of Parliament have had their throats slit while crossing the Westminster Bridge. All three voted against female suffrage. As Pitt investigates, his suspicions fall on a vocal and much-wronged suffragette; other unlikely candidates include anarchists and madmen. As usual, Pitt's wife, Charlotte, and her delightful Great Aunt Vespasia play sleuths as well. Perry uses well-mannered prose, satiric wit, and fine sense of place and time to construct a completely believable and human world. A sterling performance and a collection must.
The gentleman tied to the lamppost on Westminster Bridge is most elegantly attired - fresh boutonniere, silk hat, white evening scarf - and he is quite, quite dead, as a result of his thoroughly cut throat.
Why should anyone kill Sir Lockwood Hamilton, that kindest of family men and most conscientious member of Parliament? Before Inspector Thomas Pitt can even speculate on the reasons, a colleague of Sir Lockwood's meets the same fate in the same spot.
Public indignation is boundless, and clever Charlotte Pitt, Thomas's well-born wife, can't resist helping her hard-pressed husband, scouting society's drawing rooms for clues to these appalling crimes. Meanwhile, the Westminster Bridge Cutthroat stalks still another victim... (from back cover)

As usual, Anne Perry leaves the resolution to the crime to the end of the book. This book continues the story of Charlotte and Thomas Pitt. Charlotte is the strong heroine that Anne has created for this series. I had a hard time putting this one down.

This was one of Ms. Perry's better stories. You will begin to doubt if the mystery will be solved by Thomas or Charlotte. Even though I had a suspicion of who the culprit was, I was surprised in the end. I guessed right, but didn't know the motive. I am not sure, even now, the whole story and I doubt I ever know. We were also treated to letters from Emily from her honeymoon on the Continent, a minus in my opinion. They added nothing to this story, but acted as filler so we could learn about Paris, Venice, and Florence. Oh well, on to the next installment. Still recommending this series!
