Story takes place in the Snake River Valley (Idaho and eastern Oregon) in the 1870s. The Nez Perce Indians lived there before the white settlers. The Homestead Act of 1862 opened up the land to the white settlers. Charlotte, a rancher's daughter and Lily, a Nez Perce Indian become best friends and Charlotte warns Lily and her family that the soldiers are coming.
