Sean Russell is a master. His worlds are rich his characters complex. I was driven to read this book and saddened when it ended. Read one and you will have to read the series and then like me you will be saddened theta he is out of print.

Several groups of people are drawn together by opposing Mages and go down into some really scary caves and come back again. There are stories about how each person becomes involved, whether recently or from long ago. Some die and some live.
This was slow, understated and all about the characters. Not much is explicitly stated about the supposed "actual" plot. Much must be surmised from asides, vague utterances and people who won't tell their whole story even when facing certain death.
Having read "The Swan's War" I was prepared for the slowness. Russell seems to take delight in writing in this style. So mentally prepare yourself for an intense yet extremely stretched out chain of events.
