At times a lighthearted glimpse into the author's experiences as an archaeologist, it drags periodically as the author wanders off on tangents. For instance, an entire chapter is dedicated to ancient rope making techniques, complete with the 'patterns' used to identify them.

He also has an annoying tendency to refer to the colleges he attended only nickname, like Big University. Each time it happens, it takes me out of the story as I wonder yet again if his degree came from somewhere embarrassing or disreputable.

That said, it is a fun glimpse into reality of modern day archaeology that includes asthma attacks, dehydration, scorpions, and KFCs in Egypt and lacks the glitz and glam often present in more romanticized accounts.
