"Alone in his apartment, standing naked before a full-length mirror, Fred Wagner observes that he is simultaneously losing weight and developing a paunch, and he just wishes ... And as he wishes, starting with his feet and gradually working upwards, Fred becomes invisible." An excerpt from this book which is a blending of Thomas Berger's psychological insights and a mastery of the English language. A witty and elegant novel.

A Kafkaesque novel. Not imitative of Kafka, but observant of psychological minutiae, absurd and well-written like Kafka. And, perhaps because Berger is American, more upbeat.

A quick read that is funny by reminding us of all the frustrations that we all have on a daily basis.
