I dunno if there will be any interest, but I had decided to read Salem's Lot as my Halloween book and I thought maybe y'all would like to join in and discuss it with me. I'll say discussion would start about October 20th which would give us a monthish to order and read it. 

Do I have to read it or does the movie count? ;)  

Actually I'm pretty sure I read it as a youngster but that was a loooong time ago.

I didn't watch the movie but read the book.  If we are discussing the book I might add my two cents worth.  Great book by the way, then again I am very biased in my opinion Stephen King is the KING of Horror books for me.  Right now I am reading his son's book: Joe Hill - Heart Shaped Box, it scares the bejeesus out of me, very creepy.

Esquire published a story co-writen by King and Hill over two issues recently, it was creepy and weird. It was about a cornfield that trapped people. The way they described the cars of the people who had become victims parked outside of the field was so ominous, it was like watching a horror movie and you're like "Don't go in the freakin' cornfield! Look at the cars!". But do they listen? No. 

Too scarey for me.

I am reading the Deliverence Dane book right now.   One of the comments on back cover is by some reviewer is that it reminded them of the book The Historian.   YIKES.    I am likeing the book though  hahah

I'm interested!  I can't promise that I will post as fast as everyone would like, but I'll definitely put my two cents in eventually, once I get my thoughts together :)

I'm generally a fan of King's movies but not his books. He has a writing style that I just don't really mesh well with but he has an amazing imagination. I've read a few of his that I liked, Rose Madder being the one that sticks out most in my mind, and it's been a while since I tried any of his work, plus I remember the movie scaring the crap out of me, and that is the point of a Halloween book, so I picked it. I think I might push the discussion date up further to maybe the 25th so reading time is closer to Halloween. Usually I read my Halloween book starting a couple of days before the day so I'm reading it and getting into the Halloween mood at the right time.

Is this on? We have to read soon if it is. 

I got it for the kindle so I'm in. 

Gonna read the Just Like You Only Prettier book then get started on this one, it's a fairly large book. I might rent the movie to watch when I'm done reading it.

I'm reading them both concurrantly, just started Just Like You though, about 60% through Salem. It is long. Going quickly though. I remember when the movie was on tv, David Soul starred in it I think. But what I thought was the plot wasn't, must have it mixed up with something else from the same time period. 

The only thing I really remember from the movie was the vampires scaring the crap out of me and a person with a livestock tag in their ear like a cow. That might be remembered from something else though.

I still haven't read Salem's lot because I haven't received it.  I've PM'd the person that sent it to me too and no reply.  I find that so annoying :(  I may not be able to participate.

Finished. Boy that was a long one. Not as bad as the Historian but up there. 

Oh was it bad or just a long read? I'm about fourty pages from the end of Prettier so I'll probably start Salems Lot tomorrow. BTW I am now of the firm opinion that if given the oppourtunity to meet Celia Rivenbark I would dislike her. Intensely. ETA yup would probably dislike her to the point of being repelled by her.

I meant bad in the sense of being longer than it had to be. Too many unnecessary character details. Otherwise it's a good book. Some people like well developed characters even if they don't matter, I am not one of those. Just give me the story. 

I just have a few pages left of Prettier, it wasn't what I got from the description at all. I agree with your assessment. 

That's a little bit of Kings MO that I usually don't like, also he has no transition ability, one minute your in the woods being chased the next your in Dairy witnessing something creepy without an explanation of why the scene shifts.

Oh shoot I thought I had another day to get this finished. I'm not quite finished with the book but I'll post the first discussion question and anyone that wants to pitch in can go ahead.

How much attention does King give to setting, and why?  In what ways does setting become significant beyond providing a physical locale for the action in 'Salem's Lot--that is, what does it also contribute to mood, symbolism, characterization, and theme? To what extent does King follow conventions of gothic setting in 'Salem's Lot, or violate those conventions for unusual effects?  How are the settings described; what physical/psychological descriptions are associated with them?  In what ways (and of what) are the settings symbolic?  In what ways does King suggest that nature of the town itself draws the vampires to 'Salem's Lot? You might consider the following statement, among others: "The town kept its secrets, and the Marston House brooded over it like a ruined king."  In what ways does King suggest that the United States itself is fertile ground for vampires?

I'm really bummed.  My book got sent back because my address partially ripped off.  I guess I won't be reading this after all.  Sorry guys :(
