The big hand of the clock is at 12. The little hand is at 7. It is seven o'clock, time for Frances to go to bed. But first she needs her glass of milk, and a kiss from Father...and Mother. Then she needs her teddy bear and doll to keep her company. Then another kiss from Father...and Mother. Tigers, giants, cracks in the ceiling- everything seems to be keeping her up. Will Frances ever go to sleep?

"Small children who are adept at putting off bedtime will find their match in Frances. The soft humorous pictures of these lovable animals are delightful."

I really thought this was going to be a cute book, but was horrified that Frances' father threatened her with a spanking if she didn't go to bed (even though she was simply scared to sleep alone in her room and only wanted the comfort of her parents). Child abuse in a child's book? No thanks. Furthermore, Frances is terrified when she hears a moth flapping it's wings against her window, which she associates with the sound of a spanking and which she falls asleep to. Sad that even a fictitious character is traumatized by spanking, even sadder that child abuse is condoned in a child's book.
