Laura Vancouver is the administrator of a no-kill animal rescue shelter called HotRescues that is near Los Angeles. Laura finds out about a puppy mill that is in operation and when she goes to the site, she finds animals being kept in horrible conditions and discovers that a young man who is working for the mill's owners has dumped four beagle puppies down a drainpipe. Laura has them rescued and taken to her shelter. She also has the man who committed this crime of animal abuse sent to her shelter to learn how to take care of animals, but he isn't that compliant and causes problems at the shelter.
Laura later on finds this man's body on the sidewalk of HotRescues...very dead, and she's the only person there with the body and the murder weapon. She has to prove to the police that she didn't kill him and find out who did, while finding homes for her sweet animal babies.
This is the first in a new series by Linda O. Johnston who also writes the Kendra Ballantyne lawyer/petsitter series. Kendra also appears in the book. I was pleasantly surprised with the book since not only is it a good mystery, but it also has a lot of information about animal rescue and shelters in it. For anyone who loves animals, this is a great read. The character of Laura Vancouver is very likeable and down-to-earth, as are her assistants and volunteers at the shelter. I'm looking forward to reading the second installment in this series.

I was looking forward to a new cozy series by Ms. Johnston since I had enjoyed her pet sitter series. I'm sure the mystery was just as good in this series, but I couldn't get past the Pet Rescue details. The rescue of the puppis from the puppy mill were heart breaking.
If in real life we had to go through all that was required to adopt a puppy from this rescue center, we would probably go screaming into the night. The adoption scenes had me grinding my teeth.

This is the new Series by Linda O. Johnston. I thought I would give it a try since I really like the Pet Sitter Mystery series featuring Kendra Ballantyne. I did not care for her Romance Nocturne books.
If you have read the Kendra Ballantyne mysteries then you will meet some of the same characters in this book. Meet Lauren she runs HotRescues Shelter. (If you are a KB reader you know that HotRescues is financial supported by KBs boyfriend Dante DeFrancisco.) Lauren takes any cruelty against pets to heart. She will go out of her way to help. But would she commit murder against someone who would harm a puppy?? Follow along as she tried to figure out who and why?
Laurens solving skills stink. If you are paying attention you will know who did it at the very beginning. This series is OK. Just not a Lauren fan yet. Maybe the next book will be better.

1st in series. Quite the fun little read.
Our opening scene starts the book off with Lauren Vancover crashing a puppy-mill raid and rescues some Beagle pups from a storm drain. SHe has some heated words with Efram (on of her animal rehabilitation volunteers) and then she finds him dead at her rescue center. Unfortuneately all signs are pointing to her as the best murder suspect. Lauren is quite determined to find the killer before she is arrested, and in the meantime, finds some good homes for her animals, and even finds some love for herself.
This book was a nice change for me from my usual paranormal cozy's. Lauren was a pretty generic character and did the usual basic sleuthing. I gave this book 3 stars due to the simple fact the author mentioned HotRescues on EVERY. OTHER. PAGE. Ok, I got it! Lauren works at HotRescues! Get on with it. Other than that, it was really enjoyable, and i was way off base with whom I thought the real killer was.
