âBayou Folkâ is her first book of stories published in 1894; âA Night In Acadie,â her second book of stories, was published in 1897. Both are predominately stories of the people of the Cajun parishes of Louisiana. Her stories are generally tragic and often have a wry twist at the end, somewhat reminiscent of Ambrose Bierce's Civil War stories. It takes a while to adapt to the patois of the locale, but for me, it brought back reminiscences of the French-Canadian town in which I grew up.
