This was an excellent read. I have seen reviews that praise it as the greatest scifi post-apocalypse, alien invasion genre and others that revile it for its shallowness and supposed link to Scientology. I don't know about Scientology or greatest book ever, but this was an excellent read. The book is well paced. The characters are not very well developed but it is an action book--I don't expect great character development. So if you want a fun read that will take awhile (1000 pages), enjoy this one.
This book was a marvel of sci-fi writing. I don't think L. Ron Hubbard wrote this book. All of his books before this one were rubbish. He only started writing good books when he founded that stupid cult(scientology) and got all of those followers. I think one of his followers probably wrote all of L. Ron's books for him. That having been said, the story of this book is epic. Johnny Good boy Tyler is one of the surviving humans after an alien slaughter. He has grown up in a world damaged by warfare and dominated by evil alien dominator s bent on mining our planet to an empty shell.
An entertaining science fiction saga filled with aliens and a plucky hero
This was my first book over 1,000 pages. The action from the first page to the last was so fun, the book never even seemed long. Packed with deeper meanings, and lots of fun.
Great read. Very intertaining and hard to put down which is bad because it is a long book. :) I look at it as more to enjoy.
huge, suspense sci=fi thriller.
The Evening Sun says that it is a mix of the 'Star wars' sagas, 'Raiders of the lost arc' and the triumph of 'rocky I, II & III'.

One of the true epic tales of science fiction. Not all sci-fi buffs agree with my assessment, but hey, it's a big world. :D
According to a number of reviews, the movie made from this book may be the worst sci-fi film ever made. I saw it once and definitely do not need to see it again. But then I was never a fan of John Travolta, even when he didn't play an evil alien.
There are questions as to whether Hubbard actually wrote this book, or it was ghost authored. However, it doesn't make a difference to me who really wrote the book, as I thoroughly enjoyed it. A great tale of an Earth laid waste by alien despoilers and the human boy who decided to avenge those who died defending his world.
This book captured me with its very first sentence: "Man," said Terl, "is an endangered species."

This is by far, my favorite scifi book in the history of ever. I have used this book to get many juniors and seniors into reading. They always swear they would never have time to read a 4 inch thick paperback. They are soon hooked and I see it riding on top of their stack of school books down the hall. I teach math and english. I use scifi in the math classroom and it works, This book is a great tool for me as well as a great written work.
Good book. Long.
This copy is old and kinda beat-up. Front cover is almost ready to come off. Still readable though.
