Devaux, Baron of Brayeton, of his lands and title, names him High Sheriff of Nottingham, and sends him off to vanquish the Saxon outlaws who have been plaguing the shire and flouting Norman authority, Tr? finds himself confronting not only recalcitrant Saxon barons and John's treacherous minions but a courageous Saxon noblewoman (and widow of a Norman knight) with an agenda of her own. Strong, well-matched, and interestingly conflicted protagonists drive the plot of this intricate tale, which provides not only a compelling, highly sensual romance but also a welcome insight into the characters and political and social realities of the period. Threaded throughout with elements of the Robin Hood legend, this well-written romance is a neat blend of fact and fiction, and readers who like their historicals with a strong sense of time and place will find it a cut above the rest.
