Looked for this book as it was listed as having a "beta" hero on All About Romance, i.e., a kind a loving hero rather than a growling mess. It was an enjoyable read.
A Regency Lord is coerced into researching the appearances of a ghost at "Prinny's" balls. He doesn't believe in ghosts as he's a man of science. However, after seeing the shost, and chasing it throgh hallways, he finds himslef suddenly locked in a closet with an enchanting, outspoken woman who thinks that maybe the ghost is real and belongs to her mother, who recently died under mysterious circumstances.
I won't say the mystery is complex but the relationship is sweet.

great book
I was putting off reading this book, mainly because of the cover. I didn't have anything else to read so I picked this book up and boy was I mad I didn't read it when I first received it in the mail. It was extremely good. I'm picky, and this was a very good read.
It was a strange story with strange characters. However, I was glad to have read it. I recently read 'Heir to the Duke' and this is a prequel. Ms. Ashford made note of the fact she had written 'The Bargain' earlier, 1997 to be exact, and she thought it would be interesting to tell the other brothers' stories. I would have thought that would have been a given, since they all appeared in 'The Bargain'. They all played some part in the younger brother's (Alan) story. I am glad if finally dawned on her to continue with this family saga.
Science makes this a book that is good to read for some dont feel you can make science and feelings mix.
This book started out with an interesting premise: A man of science was entreated to come to the prince's house and rid it of sightings of a deceased actress. Ariel, daughter of the dead actress, wants to know why her mother committed suicide. They join forces to get to the bottom of things. Then the 'man of science,' Lord Alan Gresham turns out to be of a mind that women never have original thoughts or much common sense.
About midway, the book changes to Ariel helping the Gresham sons (Alan's brothers) with their love/engagement woes. Then Ariel finds out that she has a living father and pursues that avenue. Then the sightings of the dead actress occur again.
