Ancient history at work in celtic tribes in Spain told mostly from the perspective of a bard who longs to make a trip to an island far away. Political manuevering within the tribe for leadership and battle glory is done with careful attention to characters.

I loved this novel. It is a compelling story about the legendary beginnings of the Irish people, blending the hypothesis that people from the Iberian peninsula migrated to Ireland with Irish fairy and other mythology. The author is terrific at evoking the past and creating people who are easy to care for and remember. She successfully made myth and fantasy completely plausible and realistic for me. I plan to read more by Morgan Llywelyn.

This is a wonderful novel for those who care about ancient Ireland, or about artist figures in long-ago societies. Bard is one of Llywelyn's best, and I highly recommend it.

For Morgan Llywelyn fans, this is classic! She includes so much historical research in such logical, though fictional ways, that the reader feels as though it's a true life story. I'd recommend it to anyone who's interested in ancient Irish history and myth.

This is a book about the beginning of Ireland, history and mythology based on the poetry of a real pre-Christian bard. I had read and thoroughly enjoyed a few of Morgan Llywelyn books, but this one seemed to start slow and I initially wasn't sure it would hold my interest. But it snuck up on me, and soon my heart was racing with every battle. Highly recommended!

Is there a Morgan Llywelyn book that is not excellent? Love her books and this is no exception. If Irish culture is of interest to you, her novel of the odyssey of the Irish which blends facts, speculation, and fantasy is fascinating.
