This imaginative thriller got great reviews from all the big names, not just from me. You've never met a police detective quite like Bangkok's Songchai Jitpleecheep, Buddhist, brothel owner (with his retired mother as mamasan) and - in a stream of asides to the reader -revealer of Thai wisdom and life truths. A murdered farang (foreigner) turns out to be CIA and also connected romantically to Songchai's beautiful, talented, and most profit-making "girl." Post-9/11, Songchai and his boss, the severely bent Colonel Vikorn, know that other Americans are sure to come looking for their associate and for signs of the crime being terrorist-related. The resulting cover-ups, bribes, misinformation, and strange alliances add to the Alice in Wonderland feeling.

Second in the Sonchai Jitpleecheep police series set in Bangkok, Thailand. Very rough and gritty look at the sleazier side of Bangkok. Sonchai, aside from being a policeman, is also one of the major interest-holders in a whorehouse called The Old Man's Club and an avid Buddhist. The son of the whoremistress at the Club and an unknown American GI, Sonchai's view of Western Civilization and Christianity can be quite scathing at times--although, to be honest, most of the time I found myself wholeheartedly agreeing with him. Flag-waving, church-going patriots are most likely not going to be fans of this book. LOL
Anyway, the mystery begins when one of the Club's girls, Chanya, runs into the bar of the club covered in blood and stoned out of her mind. What Sonchai finds when he goes back to her customer's hotel room is a dead American, gutted stem to stern with his penis whacked off and sitting on the bediside table. Later it's discovered that he's a CIA operative. Oh-oh. Yeah. LOL Great book--not for the faint of heart, but I'm definitely looking forward to the next one--when Sonchai most probably gets to meet his now-located American father.

Another great, steamy, sultry, surprising novel featuring Sonchai Jittlecheep, a smart, humble, and fascinating Thai detective. I loved Bangkok 8, and this follow up is equally spendid! Terrific plot and characters, exotic locale, great pacing, lots of fun!

Another adventure with Jitpleecheep, his mother, and Col. Vikorn. Another American CIA murdered bizarrely. Another highly entertaining story. At least as good as Bangkok 8.

I enjoyed this second book in the Sonchai Jitpleecheep series. What's the mystery? Well, there are several and Sonchai's descriptions engaged me and made me want to learn more about his life as a Thai policeman, a devout Buddhist, and a sardonic observer of American life. I look forward to reading the next book, Bangkok Haunts.

not as good as the first one; bangkok 8. it didn't flow as well. but it was still pretty good. love his descriptions of thailand. feels like i've been there in my mind. and outrageous and insightful as ever.
Again a winner from John Burdett.
