A tough read, but worth it. Saramago is an artist. Also recommended by the same author: All the Names.

Nobel Prize Winning novel. so it has an interesting writing style, and lovely language, not so heavy on an actual forward moving story.

This is typical Saramago: beautiful, dense prose (though more lighthearted than most of his other books), with magical realism at the core. Saramago won a Nobel Prize for his body of work after one of his later novels came out, "Blindness", which I recommend much more highly than this one. This is one of his more accessible books, though, and a decent (if a bit slow-paced) read.
