Well I have read 50 percent so far. This is an unusual book, it is an interesting read yet it does not hold my interest enough for me finish reading it. I am making it available and in the interim I may pick it upp and read the last half.

Read for a college course. Blues theme follows throughout, very intriguing.

This was a fascinating book. I found it unique and refreshing in its method of exploring characters other than those I expected and I was never bored.

I love this book and have bought copies for a wide range of friends. The reason that it touched me is that it offered me an idea about heaven and salvation which was completely unique to my understanding of life. Gloria Naylor asks the question "How do you begin to imagine Heaven when you are mired in suffering and can't lift your eyes to the sky?". She creates a place where the desperate can heal enough to begin to dream and hope.
As I understand it,the only obstacle to salvation is a lack of hope. Bailey's Cafe is a place where the broken can lay down their despair and hope can find a place in their hearts.
Sad and lovely and wonderful. Read it and be uplifted!

Gloria Naylor's message is always relevant no matter what is occurring in current events. She is honest, real and raw in her writing. She speaks truth to the American experience and no matter what your identity you can't help but reflect and be changed by her words. Although, she does not write for a light read, she writes with spirit and will allow you emotional and intellectual growth.

"...is reminiscent of Ralph Ellison's finest work. Underscoring both the specificity of her characters' lives and the general ambience of black existence, Naylor movingly captures life in New York and America." - Publishers Weekly

This is not a review of the book but rather to state that the book I have does not have this ISBN number. It is a paperback, but has a hardcover ISBN.
