The insight and humor make it a "must" for anyone about to visit the Arabic Middle East. I've given it as a gift to several friends and colleagues, and read it again regularly - especially when returning to the region.

A fun, light read. Lots of humor and details about Arab culture. This book covers Egypt, Sudan, Iran, Beirut, Yemen, Dubai, Oman, Libya ... and Iraq. An important read if you intend to visit one of these places!

Think the Middle East is confusing? Read this entertaining book and find out how right you are! Tony Horwitz spent 2 years living in Cairo, Egypt and freelancing as a journalist throughout the Middle East. His observations of the contradictions and absurdities of life in that region of the world are both funny and insightful. I also found the book a little depressing because it highlights the cultural gulf between the Arab world and the Western world - one that we are not likely to bridge.

Even though this was written back in the 1990s, the stories still ring true in 2011. Horwitz is a fearless traveler and wonderful writer, he shares his experiences with real people.
