Bad Monkeys was the first book from Matt Ruff that I picked up. I'm so glad I happened upon it in the library - he's quickly earned a place among my favorite authors.
Bad Monkeys is a book that keeps you guessing all the way to the end. It's not a mystery - in fact, I'd be hard-pressed to categorize it all all. It's quirky, with a healthy dose of satire and a storyline with more twists and turns than perhaps anything I've ever read.
I want to be careful not to give anything away, so here's a brief and deliberatly vague teaser: Jane Charlotte is a self-confessed member of The Department for the Final Disposition of Irredeemable Persons (or Bad Monkeys). In a series of sessions with a psychotherapist in a prison psych ward, Jane tells the story of how she joined the Bad Monkeys, an organization devoted to fighting evil. Are the Bad Monkeys only in her head, or is something very large and very crazy at work?
Ruff has spun a real page-turner in Bad Monkeys. This is a book I stayed up half the night to finish, and couldn't help myself from exclaiming, "WHAT? No WAY!" to no one in particular at several points in the story.
Check it out. Ruff's masterful with his deception -- you won't be disappointed.

Interesting and different. A quick and trippy novel about a secret crime fighting organization. Bizarre, but fun. I may have to re-read it before I can post it to make sure I caught everything.

One of the strangest books I've ever read. It is well written and I didn't want to put it down.

This is a most engaging read. It captures you right from the start, and it is a whirlwind of events from there onward. I started it last night and could not put it down until 3 AM when I knew I had to get some rest.

I really enjoyed this book. It's the book I wished The Illuminati had been. The storytelling is clever, funny and riveting and the story is filled with secret societies, gadgets, and a world that will keep you reading. The character study of Jane Charlotte will stay with you long after the book is finished. Good stuff!

Twisty, exciting story about a woman who may or may not work for a secret organization who fights evil. There are some amazing twists within the story. The lead character, Jane Charlotte, is a fascinating creation.
This was a fun little read. If you like mystery/crime fiction or spy fiction and are feeling either drunk or tongue-in-cheek, you might like it.

A very good and quite unique story with the author acknowledging Philip K Dick as one who helped him to shape it. That I can believe.
I enjoyed this quirky, amusing book about good, evil, reality and fiction. I especially liked Jane's interactions with her instructors.
