I loved this cd. There are 5 cd's. The story line is quite amusing. About a woman who does just about what ever she wants in a time when this isn't acceptable. She always gets away with it. Very intertaining. Little sexy (maybe a little more than a little),a little wonder and alot of great story. You'll wish you'd of known Belle when you are done with this story. Great time spent.

I listen to audiobooks while doing my daily walk, and this one made the miles go by quickly. The narrator was especially effective with this material, I thought.

Nice to read that things haven't changed a whole lot since the 40's regarding loose women, drinking, adultery, etc. Hard to believe that some things even remain the same. Belle is a single mom trying her best to be moral in an amoral society in Southern Louisiana! I can relate to her bouts of wanting human touch but abiding by her Primer of Proprieties.

"belle canrtrell felt guilty about killing her husband and she hated that. feeling guilty, that is. a layt should'nt do something she's hoing to feel guilty about later, was a rule belle kept firmly in mind."
the year is 1920,prohibition is in full swing, women are clamoring for the vote, and a narrow-minded intolerance is on the rise. life ins't easy for an unmarred woman, not in a little town like gentry, louisiana, especially after she's sent to jail for swinnimg inan indecent bathing costume with a group fo suffragettes. GREAT STORY
