It's not about breeding babies, like you might think... a midwife, an outcast doctor and the small town that surrounds their story, read it and fall into the small town "every one knows every one story," and then be surprised by how it all turns out.

I loved all the twists and turns of this book. First Karen Harper book I've read but won't be the last.

Interesting book, original idea. I do have to say that I have lived my whole life in Kentucky and have never heard people talk in the manner that Ms Harper writes their accents.

Good read.
A midwife suspects an illegal adoption ring has infiltrated her small Appalachian community and must turn for help to the town doctor--a man who strongly disagrees with her ideas of medicine.

Emma Weston, midwife extraordinare, and Griff Cusak, the town's new doctor, join forces to find out who's stealing newborn babies from the women of Shelter, Kentucky. As the tension heats up, Amy Marcs goes into high gear with Appalachian accents and lots of enthusiasm. Harper has filled this romp through the backwoods with romance, kidnapping and suspense, all ably portrayed by Marcs. Interestingly, only Emma Weston has no accent, despite being born and bred in the back hills of Kentucky.

I liked this story very much. Good characters and good story line. After living in a small town for 10 years, it brought stuff home to roost. Outsiders are often always outsiders, no matter how hard they try. Something to think about as you read. Who's to be trusted and who isn't???!!!!!

This is a gripping and suspenseful novel set in the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee.
At one point when I was reading it, I got the feeling I was being watched like the
character in the novel.

Based in the hills of Appalachia this is the story of Emma Weston, who is a modern midwife. The only person she feels she can trust is Dr. Griff Cusak. Their personal beliefs regarding child bearing clash completely. They share one thing, a deep sympathy for their patients. They also share in the dark world of terror in an effort to expose "The Baby Farm" which is stealing babies to sell. Very intriguing.
Well written, entertaining, lots of twists and turns. No bad language or sexual scenes. Great mystery and insight into Appalachian culture.

Pregnat women are disappearing from the hills of Kentucky.
Excellent book!
Terror in the hills of Appalachia!
50 pages into this book and it just didn't hold my interest, for one thing when a book starts out trying to use 'mountain talk/slang' and the first 50 pages is just descriptions of the sun, moon and stars, those two combined just turned me off and I had no desire to even try to go further into this book. The few characters introduced were not worth remembering and when there is always a love/hate relationship it just makes books that much more disgusting to try to get a good story out of it.
Good book.
