Audrey and Julian are two emotionally tortured souls who think that life can only play out in a certain manner for them and neither thinks love will be in it. Audrey has secrets as does Julian but in time they learn to trust and the secrets are revealed. A great love story in a western setting.
This is wonderful story from a new author. Second in a planned trilogy. Wonderful story teller and now I need to find the first book and can't wait for the third book.

This is the second novel in a series of 5 books about the MEN OF DEFIANCE. Sheriff Kemp is up to no good; he has the town so tied up in his evil clutches that Defiance, Dakota Territory, is dying.
Kemp controls Audrey Sheridan by threatening the eight town orphans shes raising; he forces Audrey to rob Julian McCaid. When Julian catches her and takes her to the sheriff for punishment, he makes Audrey work on Julians ranch as cook for a month. This has been Kemps goal to get her near Julian so she keeps him busy while Kemp is up to other (illegal) devilment.
Frankly, I found this part of the novel to be rather contrived, but the rest of the book was great. Once Audrey moved to Julians ranch, the storys pace picks up and things start happening.
The characters and their motivations are what make this into such an interesting story. Julian plans to create a hunting lodge on his sheep ranch, where he will bring friends and business associates.
He is looking over the pedigrees of the women hes considering having for a wife; because of his mixed heritage, he wants children who will be able to welcome in any drawing room in America. Obviously, love has no part in this selection process.
Audrey, because of her humble beginnings, would not be a candidate. However, Julian is extremely interested in this handsome woman and he offers her $1000 for a summer of romance (with no strings). Audrey declines.
Audrey and Julian are interesting characters with dramatic back stories; it keeps the reader turning the pages. At the outset, they seem to have little in common. But Julian recognizes Audreys goodness and before long Julian starts revising his requirements for the perfect family.

Fantastic book! I just love Elaines books. The characters are so strong, but so loving. The story was terrific! I can't wait to see what is next!!
