Excellent read - although if m/m bothers you this is not for you. Truly likable characters stumbling their way from loving friendship to being in love with their best friend-terror stricken that something they do or say will destroy the relationship along the way. I really enjoyed it.
FYI, this is actually two stories - one novella [as above] and one short story taking place one year later. I enjoyed both.

If you are looking for a sweet and sexy gay romance, this book is for you. Do NOT expect plotting or action even though the premise of the book is that both leads are cops sent undercover to a gay resort to find evidence linking the owner to supplying drugs killing gay men in a nearby city. That mission is merely a plot device to get the two leads to play gay lovers and force them into sexual situations. That said, the story is a straight-up (pardon the pun) romance and is thoroughly enjoyable. Both characters are well-drawn, the backstory though lightly and quickly completed does exist, and the relationship and connection between the two leads is palpable. My only negative criticism is that the plot device in the main book is so weak you actually start to wonder if they're EVER going to look for evidence what with participating in Wankathons and similarly the plot device of conflict in the relationship in the small epilogue Christmas story is so weak it almost became confusing (although the sex was still quite hot!)

I really enjoyed everything about this except that it was set in the past. A big part of me said WHY? Nothing was really said that explained why it was in the past so it just didn't make sense.
Other than that, I loved the tension of two straight guys falling for each other. Since one of them had fallen before the other, I could understand his hesitation in admitting his feelings for his partner. And when the partner is saying one thing and doing another, more confusion ensues.
I read another review that said there wasn't enough plot here but I disagree. I didn't feel The Assignment was the plot. The plot was how these two men deal with each other and I thought that was handled very well.

I love love love this book! If I was stranded on a deserted island and could only takes my top five favorite books with me, this book would be included. While some aspects of the book are a bit cliché and somewhat predictable it does not distract from the text. This is an easy and fun read that keeps you looking forward to the next scene. "The Assignment" is an absolute necessity for a summer read!

This was one of the first m/m ebooks that I read and it was fun and well-written. I highly recommend it.
