I read Kurland like a religion and this one barely qualifies as paranormal but the three witches are back with us, so I guess that's the qualifier. That said, this is better than almost any of Kurland's recent books and absolutely touching at different points. Gillian is half-child, half-woman who is sent off to Christopher (the Dragon) for protection and of course marriage figures into the picture. What else was a woman to do in that day and age? Christopher has sworn to Gillian's brother that he will take care of her and get her away from her villanious father. (This guy is a piece of work, believe me.) But Christopher has issues, big ones, physical and emotional and Gillian has regularly been beaten to a pulp by her not-so-loving parent so she is as skittish as a whipped puppy. Kurland takes you through the drama of these two finding their own way. It may sound like a trite romantic novel but there's more to it than that. You will laugh outloud and find yourself agonizing over this romance. The cast of characters living in this castle all have developed, heart-warming personalities. This is an outstanding sample of Kurland's writing. I re-read this regularly.

My absolute favorite historical romance of all time. Christopher and Gillian are so well-written I could cry. It will throw you through every emotion and leave you feeling completely satisfied. It also sets the stage for Colin's story. I can't wait!

This is my favorite of all Lynn Kurland's books. Even though I have read them all, still, when I think of her, I think of this story - and as one of the most moving in this genre I have ever read. It's always the first I suggest when I point a new reader her way. Highly, highly recommended.

Set near the Scottish border at a rugged castle on the edge of the sea, this is the story of a courageous lord who lost everything he held dear, of a strong young woman willing to sacrifice everything for happiness, of two lost souls who find in each other a reason to live again, to laugh again, and to love for the first time...

Gillian of Warewick is fated to wed the notorious Christopher, the Dragon of Blackmour, a mighty warrior whose name strikes fear in his enemies. Though it is not what she would have wished, it is best she begins a new life.

Christopher does not want a wife. Fate left him without his sight and few know of his wound, for he hides it well. He still trains with his men and wields his sword in the lists and rules his castle. Yet he fears what may happen when Gillian learns the truth.

Fulfilling a promise, Christopher sends for his bride, remembering her as a lovely child, not a woman. Though wary of her husband, Gillian accepts her place in his household and tries to unravel the mystery surrounding him.

Their blossoming relationship, the powerful love that grows and the wondrous healing of their souls is what makes this such a stunning love story.

I loved this book!!!

Wow, Lynn Kurland can sure write a compelling story. I am constantly amazed at her talent. I have yet to read a book of hers that I do not get totally wrapped up in. Chris and Gillian's story was so heartbreaking yet full of love. It accurately depicts a handicap as well as a victim of abuse, and how they each learn to trust and love each other. It is a fabulous book you wont be able to put down.

Enjoy! :)))

Loved it! Loved it! LOVED IT! Laughed and cried my way thru the book. Couldn't put it down. Gillian has no confidence until she meets Christopher. He helps change her life by giving her the courage she needs. Christopher doesn't feel completely whole until Gillian shows him that he is more than she ever hoped for. What a great love story!

I almost didn't want to re-post this book because I loved it so much!!!

If you read the Amazon reviews you'll see that this is obviously either a "love it or hate it" book. Me... I love it. I love the way Christopher and Gilian's relationship gently and gradually unfolds as they learn to trust each other. Like all Lynn's books, its quality is in the emotion that threads between the lines. You have to really READ the book and get into it to catch it. Consequently, they are their best on the second or third read when you catch everything you missed on the first read.

Regarding the witches... personally, I don't care for witches in my books, but these fill the role of "healer" and the only brews that we are actually told about are merely herbal teas, which even modern medicine today is using. Sure, one of them has the gift of sight, but I'm okay with that. So you can enjoy them if you like them, or ignore the suspicions that they're witches and think of them as the healers that they are if that's what you prefer.

And I also have to add that my favorite part of the book is the conversation with Blanket. Now THAT is fantastic writing!

This novel is set in medieval Ireland in the Scottish border. It is the story of a woman who sees herself less than she is and it is the story of a man who finds in her a reason to live and to laugh again.
