However, the lake area had long been inhabited by the Abenaki Nation of the Algonquin Federation. These people called the waters Kees-ee-hunk-nip-ee, meaning ìgoose lake in the highlandsî (later shortened to Kusumpy or Casumpa)... more » and also Asquam, meaning ìwater.î The latter name was eventually shortened to become Squam Lake. The book includes early Native American lore and the gradual development of what are known as the Five Townsónamely, Moultonboro, Sandwich, Holderness, Center Harbor, and Ashland.
