I couldn't put this one down. I love the continuing storyline that began with The Surgeon. This is the second book, that up to this point, is a series of six. read them in order because you start to develope a relationship with these characters and you care what happens to them next.

It seems as if the Surgeon is back though he is still in prison. A disturbing pattern immerges. Then Rizzoli's worst nightmare comes true. You will want to read both the Surgeon and the Apprentice for a good scare.

A fantastic book following Tess Gerritsens book "The Surgeon". It was a gripping story! Keeps the reader turning pages until the end. As with most of her books, I am somewhat disappointed when the book is over because I enjoy the story so much. I recommend reading The Surgeon before this book to give you more insight on The Apprentice. Tess Gerritsen books have become a "must read" for me. Enjoy!

Although this is marketed as the second book in the
Rizzoli and Isles series, it is actually the first on in which Rizzoli is a main character. I love the show on TV and love the books. Jane in the book seems a harder edged character than Jane on TV, but the suspense is wonderful in the book! I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of Book 3 and can't read them fast enough.

Shocking, sadistic murders are committed that are similar to those committed by a serial killer who has been safely put away. Police think they are dealing with a copycat killer. But it goes so much deeper than that. Really good read, and I loved the ending.

This book will give most people the "creepy" feeling while reading it that someone is staring in your window - even if you live in the middle of nowhere! Tess has the knack for writing suspensfully and reading will also make you want to keep going until you come to the very last sentence. Great book and would recommend if you haven't read her before, but start with her book, The Surgeon first.

Gerritsens sequel to The Surgeon is pretty good as far as sequels go. Gerritsen created Jane Rizzoli, a female Boston homicide detective who is as intense and complex as Patricia Cornwells Kay Scarpetta. However, the book falls flat when it comes to the plot; it seems a re-tread of other, better serial killer novels.

Warren Hoyt, the Surgeon himself, returns but its not great; hes basically a Hannibal Lecter clone and several small chapters/prologues are written in italics in his words. Gerritsen pairs Hoyt with another serial killer known to the Boston PD as the Dominator whose modus operandi is similar to Hoyts. The discovery of a corpse in a ritzy Boston suburb starts the plot rolling.

Rizzoli sees the connection between the Dominators victim and Hoyts other victims, and visits Hoyt in prison. Later, we learn that Hoyt and the Dominator have contacted each other by mail. Added into this volatile mix is Dr. ODonnell, a psychiatrist who wants to understand the human monsters but whose work is viewed with disdain by the police.

There is a great deal of suspense, particularly when Rizzoli realizes that shes the next target of the killers. Theres a lot of forensic information here, as is the case with novels like this. The grisly nature of the murders is sensationalistic. Rizzoli also gets a new love interest in the form of FBI agent Gabriel Dean, and this is handled with realism and subtlety. Dean has the uncanny ability to know where to look for evidence, and what kind of evidence to look for. The ending is very suspenseful, but there are a lot of loose ends unaccounted for. Not the greatest book that Gerritsens written.

Book 2, Rizzoli and Isles series. I have to say that I have watched the program on TV and read two of the books in this series. I find that I like both for different reasons but like the books more then the TV series. The books are more in depth and can go places the TV series can't begin to go.

You have to have read the first book in order to follow what is happening in this one...this one picks up where the first one ended...you get to know a bit more about Rizzoli and what makes her tick and you get introduced to Dr. Isles. Isles isn't in this one much but enough to understand how her and Rizzoli met. You get to know why Rizzoli thinks that she needs to show no emotion and why she thinks she has to be as good if not better then her male counterparts. You also get to find out more about the Surgeon and why he thinks he needs to manipulate women and why he needs to kill. I don't especially like the way it ended but can live with it in the long run.

It is a boiling hot summer in Boston. Adding to the city's woes is a series of shocking crimes in which wealthy men are made to watch while their wives are brutalized -- a sadistic demand that ends indeath. The pattern suggests one man: serial killer Warren Hoyt, recently put behind bars. Police can only assume an acolyte is at large, a maniac basing his attacks on the twisted medical techniques of the madman he so admires. At least that's what Detective Jane Rizozoli thinks. Forced to reconfront the killer who scarred her -- literally and figuratively -- she is determind to finally end Hoyt's awful influence. But this time around, the vendetta is more vicious than she ever would have imagined.

-- Creepy but fun to read. The killer was who I suspected soon after their introduction, but it was still fun to read to the end --

It is a boiling hot Boston summer. Adding to the city's woes is a series of shocking crimes in which wealthy men are made to watch while their wives are brutalized. A sadistic demand that ends in abduction and death. The pattern suggests one man: serial killer Warren Hoyt, recently moved from the city's streets. Police can only assume an acolyte is at large, a maniac basing his attacks on the twisted medical techniques of the madman he so admires. At least that's what Detective Jane Rizzoli thinks. Forced again to confront the killer who scarred her-literally and figuratively-she is determined to finally end Hoyt's awful influence...even if it means receiving more resistance from her all male homicide squad. But Rizzoli isn't counting on the U.S. government's sudden interest. Or on meeting Special Agent Gabriel Dean, who knows more than he will tell. Most of all, she isn't counting on becoming a target herself, once Hoyt is suddenly free, joining his mysterious blood brother in a vicious vandetta...

The Apprentice
(2002)
A novel by
Tess Gerritsen

h may be behind bars, but Warren Hoyt still haunts a helpless city, bequeathing his evil legacy to a student all too diligent - and all too deadly.
A year has passed since the capture of the Surgeon, serial killer Warren Hoyt, yet the memory of his brutal crimes continues to haunt Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli. Now she faces a new killer, a hunter who preys on well-to-do couples. For Rizzoli the death scenes have a horrifying air of familiarity, especially when she realizes that this new killer is copying one obscure element from Warren Hoyt's crimes.

My wife watches a great deal of television. She discovered Rizzoli & Isles on TNT. We started watching it and liked it. As usual, I then looked up the author of the books upon which it is based. I ordered the first one from Paper Back Swap. I liked it and proceeded to put together the entire series, at least to date. Each book has an interesting twist, or several. As a retired police sergeant and detective, I have had the opportunity to interview some psychopaths and I find Gerritsen's villains to be believable. I don't want to get too specific and spoil any surprises, but if you like mysteries, this book will satisfy.

From Publishers Weekly: "...A sequel to last year's bestselling The Surgeon...in that novel this popular author introduced a terrific lead character, Jane Rizzoli, a female Boston homicide detective who rivals Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta for intensity and complexity. Her nemesis, serial killer Warren Hoyt, aka the Surgeon, whom Rizzoli sent to prison, returns here, too; that's not so terrific, as he's basically a Hannibal Lecter clone, though Gerritsen does pair him up this time with a second serial killer, known among cops as the Dominator. The discovery of the corpse of one of the Dominator's victims in a ritzy Boston suburb gets the action moving. Rizzoli notes connections between the Dominator's handiwork and that of Hoyt, and visits Hoyt behind bars. Eventually it's revealed that Hoyt and the Dominator have contacted one another by mail. Hoyt escapes and links up with the Dominator, and it's no surprise that Rizzoli is their number one target. The novel is suspenseful and stuffed with an encyclopedia's worth of tightly detailed forensic lore. Rizzoli gets a new love interest (Hoyt killed her last one, in The Surgeon), an FBI agent, which is handled with realism and subtlety, but her fuming at man's inhumanity to woman may grate on male readers. There are first-person italicized passages from Hoyt's point of view, a genre cliche, and at times the grisliness of the murders tends toward sensationalism..."
