Part travelogue, part insight into life in remote locations on earth, this highly readable memoir gets into the nitty gritty of wildlife veterinary medicine and conservation projects. Very detailed, informative and exciting (including such pearls of wisdom as "never run from a charging elephant", then the author finds himself having to test this theory).

Gives an insight also into why some well-intentioned conservation and third world development projects fail and produce the opposite of their intended goals. Plus an if-it-wasn't-real-it-would-be-funny experience with third world customs; read legalized extortion.
