Another Brooklyn is the new novel by Jacqueline Woodson, the author of Brown Girl Dreaming. At times, I find myself lost in this story and its emotions. At other times, however, I find myself focused on the structure of this very short book and lose that connection with the story itself. The book is still beautifully written and an emotional story, but it just seems to miss the intensity of Brown Girl Dreaming.

The writing style of this book is lyrical and poetic. Beautiful! August moves from TN to Brooklyn with her father and brother in the 70s when she is about 8. She meets three other girls who become her best friends and we see Brooklyn in the 70s, but what we really see is 4 girls in the 70s as teens and on the cusp of adulthood. When they move to NY she keeps telling her brother their mom is coming "tomorrow." As the book progresses we are told in the short poetic prose style her mom's story. It is sad and haunting. The beauty of this book is not just the story but the writing style.
