A poignant, understated story of a very real child, set against a background of Navajo tradtions and contemporary American Indian life. A Newbery Honor Book. An ALA Notable Children's Book. A Christopher Award WInner.
This amazing book not just for children is how the navajos still live today. I live close to some Navajo reservations and no one still believes that Navajos still live in dirt hogan's, but they do. They sleep on the ground inside with maybe a blanket or rug over them and a blanket over them. Many of the children are fed Breakfast, lunch and a late afternoon snack at school.
