Like a lot of us, I was always fascinated by the story of the Romanovs and Russian history in general. Since I knew the story of Anastasia and Anna Anderson, this book sat in my TBR for a long time. What else can be new I thought. I finally picked it up since I had to send it out to someone, and boy was I wrong. I was enthralled with this book and found it hard to put down,
Anastasia's story was told from beginning to end and Anna's was told backwards. I had a hard time with that at first and thought it confusing and annoying. However it works and you find out the reason at the end of the book. Ingenious! I loved this book.

This is an interesting twist on the tale of Anastasia. It jumps around in time from the revolution against the Romanov family in 1917 to the story of Anna up to 1970 (who has tried to prove to the courts that she is Anastasia Romanov). Some parts are hard to read but a part of history. The question (Is she Anastasia?) is answered in the end.
Perhaps, the fault lies with me, and I am simply not the reader for I Was Anastasia by Ariel Lawhon because I know the history of Anastasia and Anna Anderson. I would love to hear the perspective of a reader not familiar with the history. Knowing a history does not make reading a story of that history any less engaging or entertaining. For me unfortunately, the circular structure of the book and its billing as a âhistorical suspenseâ make it not the book for me.

Anastasia is reportedly killed by the Bolsheviks with the rest of her family. But she survives and is found and bandaged up and lives here and there until 1970. She hopes that someone in authority will believe who she is. Some believe but are in authority and those who can prove who is is, seek just to claim her dad's money and disclaim her. Did Anastasia survive? That is a mystery.
