Civil War Col. Edward Bacon, of the 6th Michigan Volunteers, first published this book in 1867, while the events he describes were presumably still fresh in his mind. He describes his service in the Department of the Gulf, including time spent in Baton Rouge, Manchac, and Port Hudson, Louisiana, with a great deal of the book detailing the Port Hudson siege. His descriptions are amazingly informative; his impressions (and some very strong opinions) form an amazing and thought-provoking read.
