Helpful Score: 1
"American Sniper" is a great tale of Chris Kyle's career as a Navy SEAL/sniper in Afghanistan. He focuses very little on the actual SEAL training, and most of the story deals with his deployments to the Middle East. Taya, his wife, narrates part of the book, giving her perspective. Overall it's a great, easy read.

An exceptional read.
Chris' experiences during his childhood and later on (after High School) not only formed his persona, but those experiences helped to mold him for the life of a Navy Seal Sniper.
What I didn't like about this book is all the information in the first three chapters (it was boring) however this information did set the tone for his experiences in the field, as a sniper.
There were several parts of the book that helped the reader in understanding of Chris' life. His wife, Taya, adds her thoughts during critical phases of Chris' experiences with the Navy Seals and she also speaks of the way he dealt with the presures (self imposed as they were) of being a Navy Seal Sniper.
Both Chris and Taya are painfully honest in their comments in this book.
Unfortunately we will never read another book written by Chris and his passing will leave a big hole in America's life.
Four stars is my rating, only because of the first three chapters, which I thought were boring.

Well done and well written. It gives insight into something that most of us know so very little about. My 25 yr. old son and I both read this book and then discussed the mindset of someone who is capable of such a job. Discussing Kyle's story with my Airman son added another level of respect. My thanks to his service in a war that is unlike any that our world has ever faced before.

While some of the content of Chris Kyle's memoir is interesting, you can tell he is not a writer, essentially leading his co-author to make it readable. As a book, it is essentially written in choppy fragments, and, if you look up the history, it also becomes hard to rely on anything the book says to be the truth given the known lies of the author, also somewhat harming it as a text. In other words, it is simply not good as a book in general, with, in this case, a far superior movie adaptation available as well. That said, it is not without redeeming value, as there are elements about the view of the war and everything else that ring true, and the co-author did make it work as a reasonably cohesive narrative to allow a reader to gain these insights.
