This book was me to a T when I went to EMT school and became a Basic. I even acted like her exactly. I loved one part when they ask her to go get the first in bag (it's a bag that we take with us into every call, it has literally everything you need to start working on a patient) and so she has to find it for the first time in the ambulance, and when she does and brings it to them, she says she presented it like a hunting dog presents a prize duck to its master. That was exactly me. I said if I had a tail it would have been wagging to no end because I found the bag!! It is very funny, it is very true (like I said, this book is me to a T when I started the school and my job as an EMT) and it does give you an insight into a woman who takes on this job and what she has to go through.

Wonderful - a memoir of one woman's life, and evolution from self-centered basketcase to a community-minded member of something greater than herself.

As a volunteer EMT myself, I can vouch that her book is 100% accurate in its details - from describing the training and education we go through, to the grueling and sometimes bizarre calls we go on, to the family we are blessed with (our brothers and sisters in the fire/EMS world).

I very much recommend this book.

The Author suffers from deep depression that horribly affects her everyday life. She decides to become and EMT to try to work through her depression/anxiety. It works. It was not easy for her, but she made it. A wonderful read. A small look inside the life of a depression sufferer. Overcoming obstacles on the way to personal growth and happiness. Worth the read.

Gave this book 4 stars because it was an interesting and fast moving book. For some reason I did not care for the author. She seemed to be in emergency services for her own good (title is VERY fitting!).

I am a huge fan of Jane Stern and listened to her and her husband every week on the splendid table. We are full time RV'rs and frequently refer to the Road Food Books and web site. This autobiographical book was an entirely different side of her. It was funny and so truthful. Any middle aged accomplished woman could easily relate to her mid life crises. This is also a quick read for those of us still caught up in a busy life style but one I continued to digest days after I had finished the book.

I loved this book, almost read the whole thing straight through. Jane Stern writes very well, and makes you feel you are right there with her.
Jane was having problems in her life, even though her and her husband write books and do commentary on NPR about food, and realized she actually felt good about herself when she was helping others. So she decided to become an EMT, and it changed her life!
Nice feel good story, with a happy ending!
