This is a set of morality tales set within one man's experience in Los Angeles. There are many tales of redemption here that I found satisfying.

Not your usual crime stories. An interesting, offbeat central character in a gritty, urban setting, but suffused with compassion and intelligence.

Wow! This was so good I cannot wait to read more about this character. There are books I read which I refer to as brain candy, they contain violence, mystery, romance. I like brain candy but this book is a balanced four course meal. Walter Mosley knows all the tricks but in this case he just created a character so intriguing engaging and original that no tricks were necessary.
I grew up in the city and have always known black folks but this book has given me a depth of understanding I never had before. I will read it at least once more before I post it.

Mosley at his best. This book is a must read and I can't wait to read more stories starring Socrates Fortlow.

Short stories by the creator of Easy Rawlins (Devil in a Blue Dress), featuring ex-con Socrates Fortlow. Good read.

This book introduces Walter Mosley's Socrates Fortlow, a tough, brooding ex-convict determined to challenge and understand the violence and anarchy in his world -- and in himself. (from book flap)
