This was a fun book. Witty, and romantic. Loved it.

This was thoroughly enjoyable as far as it went for a romance novel and it also had some suspense and a surprising twist.

I thought this was a very good romance novel; fairly well researched and not as corny as some! :)

I really enjoyed this book and the slow aspect of the romance. It was less events that kept the two individuals seperated and more the personalities. It was as though the author wrote the book with the age of the lovers in mind. Not the usual 18 year old debutant and certainly not the normal rake. They both had wisdom and insight that only age seems to bring. I highly recommend this book as an interesting look into a more mature romance. It was definitely a sweet story.

Love Jane Feather. You will like her to. She is easy to read and uses humor.

It was a fun book to read. Excellent dialogues between the hero and heroine. Let's face it, without good banters between the characters, romance genre is boring with usual endings. Feather does better than most, almost reminicient of Amanda Quick aka Jayne Krentz.

Obsessive much? That was what I kept thinking when I read Jack's wish to own everything Frederick Lacey owns including his sister. It's understandable but that kind of revenge seems a little too much work.
Arabella was a lot of fun. It's always nice to read about unconventional women back in the day. They have to be so clever to overcome so many prejudices in order to have what they want. She was definitely smart and loyal with a slight dose of an avenging angel. I wouldn't mind if she was a little meaner, especially towards Jack's ex-mistress.
It was a nice read. Jack and Arabella complimented each other really well.

Excellant read!
Mine is the only NEGATIVE review of this book. Feather's description of "hero" Jack makes him sound so effeminate, affected, effete, superficial, and flouncy. I keep picturing a guy wearing satin high heeled shoes and a fake mole. He carries a cane, just for fashion. He carries a sword out in the country, as if he needs a sword in the farmland. He takes a "delicate" pinch of snuff. He spends an inordinate amount of time putting on fancy clothes and dressing up each day, again out in the country. His nails are manicured and the manicure has a name. He is so affected in his countenance he is almost unbearable. To misquote Aerosmith: "Duke looks like a lady". This guy doesn't sound like much of a manly man to me. I literally could not finish this book. I read Lisa Kleypas, Loretta Chase, even Suzanne Enoch and Claudia Dain with pleasure. This book was horrid in comparison. I won't be reading more Jane Feather books. Sorry to the many of you out there who like her writing. Ick.
I had a hard time putting this book down. The H/H both have strong (but likeable) personalities, storyline is decent. Upon reflection, Jack is being added to my list of favorite hero. I hate spoilers, so that's all you'll be from me :)
Historical Romance- I really enjoyed this book..i liked the story and the characters.
Enjoyable read, although not my favorite historical romance author.
Very good, couldn't put it down most of the time. Very good.
I enjoyed this story.
Very good romance!!
Anything by Jane Feather is a must for me. This tale is rich in character and filled with quick wit and an attention getting plot. Based around a woman won in a game of cards, it is a do-not-put-down!
Good story about finding love in a forced marriage in 19th century England.
A wonderful romance novel where the love takes time to build.
historical romance
From the back cover: Jack Fortescu gambles to win, and this time his prize is not only his rival's lavish mansion but everything in it--including the man's beautiful sister! But when it comes to games, Jack has met his match.... Left homeless by her brother's escapade, Arabella Lacey has two appalling choices: pack her bags--or agree to marry the lunatic who's taken over her house. Why would such a handsome--and outrageously wealthy--man want such an unromantic arrangement? Arabella intends to find out, and have a little fun in the process at Jack's expense...literally. As Jack discovers that his reluctant bride is no ordinary beauty, he feels a stir of admiration, among other emotions, that wasn't part of the bargain. Now he's the one with everything to lose....
A great read, oh yeah except Feather uses unfamiliar language that really makes it hard to stay in the story. Not big words, foreign (think latin) words, I ended up with a dictionary in my lap. It was very distracting from what I already mentioned was a great read. Love the characters not the usual "she was gorgeous, so was he," it had way more depth. So read it but bring your latin/english & you'll probably want french/english too, dictionaries. Starting the sequel, Almost a Lady, hope it delivers too.
I started out unsure because I'm not so much a fan of Regency and the Ton. But I have to say I loved this book! I could not put it down. Jack is definitely a tortured hero but he is to-die-for. You won't be sorry you read this book.
Great story
Engrossing; good character development. Typically good Jane Feather.

This was my first Jane Feather book will be looking for more.
Englishman Jack Fortescu, the duke of St. Jules, lost his sister in the Terror. Determined to take vengeance on Frederick Lacey, the man who betrayed her to the securité, Jack ruins him at cards, gaining his fortune after Lacey kills himself. With the estate, however, comes Lacey's 28-year-old half-sister Arabella, who's self-confident, blunt and wary of the intentions of the polished but arrogant duke. When he proposes a marriage of convenience, deciding that possessing his enemy's sister is his final revenge, Arabella's suspicions redouble. But she's without support in the world, and marriage would bring her into the London political circles she has always wished to join. While their marriage is more satisfying than either expects, the distrust on both sides and Jack's silence on his past create obstacles that only Arabella's emotional bravery can overcome.
Homeless, Arabella has to decide between marrying the person who now has her house or leaving forever....
