On the eve of the Soviet Union's imminent collapse, Joe, an idealistic young American, ventures to Leningrad and Moscow in search of an unlikely salvation. Instead, he is confronted with a barren and amoral world. There he crosses paths with Gerald, a disaffected expatriate American determined to captialize on the suffering of a sorrowful nation, and Zoya, a tragic Russian woman intent on finding her own redemption. Lured into their nefarius world, Joe becomes ensnared in a conflict of wills that profoundly changes his existence.
