This book gets very mixed reviews! I enjoyed it because it carried on from 'Captive'. The story was good as I remember but I think it may have aged somewhat in what we find palatable now days in a hero. The best book of this trilogy I feel was 'The Bodyguard'. That is book #3.

Part of a historical trilogy - The Bodyguard, After the Kiss, and Captive. All three are wonderfully written, very powerful stories. This one evokes Beauty and the Beast - Marcus was seen kissing Miss Eliza Sherridan - but rather than do the honorable thing and propose - he went to war. He is badly scarred when he returns, and the guardian of his two nieces. He hires the woman he ruined to be their governess, and he falls in love with her all over again...
Started out slow, but ended good.
Second in a series. Enjoyable story.
great read!

Joan Johnston is a masterful creator of stories that make you feel as if you're falling in love again. This story brings together two unforgettable characters, a battle-scarred duke and the spirited young woman who heals his wounded heart.
a scandlous kiss then shunned by socity. he left for war then injured during the war comes home
Familiar story about a headstrong heroine and handsome hero that becomes less handsome and how they get together and learn to trust.
One of Joan Johnston's earlier books. A beauty and the beast plot.
I really wanted to like this book because I enjoyed Captive and The Bridegroom. The description seemed promising, but unfortunately it fell short. The first half was slow and too drawn out. I was excited and hopeful when I realized there was a second half, however I was disappointed. I just didn't feel a connection with Eliza and Marcus and maybe that's why I felt this book was bland.
Even though I enjoyed the other two books in the Captive series, because of this book, I'm a little hesitant to read The Bodygaurd...

Miss Eliza Sheringham grew up thumbing her nose at polite English Society. So when the dashing Captain Lord Marcus Wharton set his rakish sights on her, Eliza thought nothing of rejecting his advnces. Then a stolen kiss changed everything. Suddenly called to battle, Marcus had to leave behind the woman who had captured his heart--and the scandal ignited by their kiss. And when he came home, he discovered that his brother's disappearance had made him Duke of Blackthorne, guardian of twin nieces. Badly scarred in the war, he was destined to spend his life hiding in Blackthorne Abbey--until Eliza Sheringham showed up on his doorstep proposing herself as governess for the twins. Marcus demanded marriage as the price of the job. He knew she could never love him. Surely his looks would drive her away--now that he hungered for her more than life itself...
Great tension, in a story of redemption and love between scarred war hero and plucky girl next door.
