This book is an excellent overview of the second-largest inhabited landmass on Earth. Unfortunately, Americans know little or nothing about Africa's long history. Therefore, this was a great way to canvas the larger empires of Africa from the earliest times. Unfortunately, some people consider Africa the 'dark continent,' and this book belies the faulty notion of such an idea.
Kudos to the author for all of the maps and illustrations. It is hard to grasp floating facts without some images to help cement that knowledge. Take the quick quiz at the end of each chapter to help anchor the points. Also, there is a bibliography of books, websites, and videos for further exploration.
After reading several of Captivating History's kid's offerings, my bias favors the texts that go into one subject extensively. However, since there is so little helpful information about the long history of Africa in one slender book, this has great value. Homeschooling families will probably be great customers for this line of books.
