Mr. Charles Thompson, (the subject of the following short memoir) was the only child of Richard and Elizabeth Thompson, and w... more »as born at Mansfield, JVottini/hamshin:, in the year 1714 ; his father was a maltster in the same town, but died when his son had just completed his 14th year. Amongst those who deeply sympathized with Mrs. Thompson on the loss of her husband, were the Rev. W. Mompesson, vicar of Mansfield j and Mr. W. Wright, maltster in the same town. The former in the capacity of her pastor, directed her attention to Him who hath said "leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them, alive and let thy widows trust in me." And the latter endeavouring / I 1 i , to assuage her grief, by informing her in the presence of her son, that so long as he conducted himself with propriety, he would ever befriend him. Mr. Thompson in his youthful days had two companions, who were educated with him at the same seminary; with whom he formed an intimate acquaintance: one was named Dakin, afterwards an attorney of Mansfield ; the other Litchfield, known as Col. Litchfield; who built an house in Ratcliffe- Gate, and resided in it, on returning from his campaigns in Germany.
