I'm not a fan of Oprah-esque finding your true self kind of books so this one took me off guard when I actually enjoyed it. Sophie is a 20 something year old woman with the job and apartment of her dream, when she finds that her once best friend Carrie has died and her pact to care for Carrie's two young daughters is now a reality. This just isn't part of Sophie's well ordered life so the first thing to do is find the father of these two lovable terrors. In walks the quite handsome Louis who Carrie once described as ""making her pants fizzyâ and the unequipped sudden mother now must put this family back together, but which pieces go where and which pieces need to be chucked. This funny heartbreaking book makes you laugh and cry and in the end you are cheering on an ending that in a way I didn't see coming. I would have chucked the wrong pieces. I highly recommend this book to those that love a fairy tale.
Favorite Quote: It's not wrong for your dreams to change, it's just wrong if you don't pursue them with every ounce of energy and determination that's got you this far.

A career woman accidentally falls into motherhood when her childhood best friend dies in a car accident, leaving behind her 2 young daughters. Sound familiar? This is "Baby Boom" with Diane Keaton, only set in London with presumably a younger, prettier main character who plans parties for her "high powered" careeer.

It is really cute though, and, if you are a mother or an accidental mother, the parts with the daughters will alternately make you smile, cringe, thank God for carpet cleaner, and break your heart.

Great book about the career gal who inherits two young children when her best friend dies suddenly. The challenge of learning to care for these two lively and loving little girls is the most different kind of challenge Sophie has ever faced and it changes everything. It also brings into her life the love she didn't even know she was missing. The story hold few surprises but the characters are wonderful. A good read.

This book sat on my TBR pile for nearly a year. I finally pulled it, read the back cover and decided I didn't want to read it. It went on my PBS bookshelf. Luckily for me, a member requested it, and I thumbed thru- started in the middle and got pulled right in.
This is a beautifully constructed story about two young women friends, their life choices and how nothing they did gave them a clue on how things would work out. The characters, down to the neighbors in various locations, were clearly and naturally drawn- realistic and yet more good than petty or low minded. It was laugh out loud funny sometimes- and the astute author wrote some bits that I often believed. Especially about how much raising kids is like training dogs.
I can only say read it, please. It's a wonderful story. I am jealous of the young author- she touched all the best values and feelings, without getting too caught up in the encompassing stress of success in modern life.
Thank you to the PBS member who requested it from me. I send you joy and truth in "The Accidental Mother".

The plot of this book is not original, but the story is exceptional. The main character transforms in A way that is very believable and poignant. This is not a heavy read, but one I thoroughly enjoyed.
