Jim Butcher rotates between 2 series, his Harry Dresden stories and this, my FAVORITE series about Tavi and his planet of complex and different species. Jim Butcher really drives his stories in unpredictable directions, with many minute details that made me a real fan of his books. Unfortunately, the Dresden TV show was dismal so I didn't watch. My son who doesn't like to read also liked these book, and used them for his required English book report assignments. He told me "Mother, Jim Butcher obviously plays a lot of video games!" Well, I don't play a lot of video games but I do like his books.
The new releases always come out in hard cover, then in about 10 months are released in paperback.

I'm such a Dresden Files fan that I just had to give the Codex Alera books a chance. I loved the first one so much that I had to buy the next 3 just so I wouldn't have to wait to read more of the continuing adventure. Academ's Fury did not disappoint and I'm now eagerly beginning Curser's Fury which I am sure will be just as exciting.
For centuries, the people of Alera have harnessed the furies-elementals of earth, air, water, wood, and metal-to protect their land from aggressors. But no fury can save them from the dangers they face within. A mysterious attack from accross the sea has weakened the First Lord. Should he fall, a bloody civil war is inevitable. The responsibility of fending off assassination attempts and treachery within the First Lord's circle of spies falls on Tavi, the one man with no fury to call...
I enjoyed this book, though I felt lost at times because I never read the first of the series. It seemed to switch back and forth between characters and I got confused, but it was interesting enough to keep me reading to the end.

Excellent book. Well paced with a fantastic plot that follows up on the initial book's story line quite satisfyingly.
Great read. Definitely a nice continuation to the original story. Very engrossing, particularly towards the end of the book. Jim Butcher has done it again.
This is my favorite Jim Butcher series. 6 books, then it ends. I loved every book and recommend this for young male readers, I even got my son to read it. The imagination, the story was just great and thrilling! READ IT, but in order, starting from the 1st book.
The series is somewhat predictable, but the books are well crafted.
This is Book 2 of The Codex Alera series.
The first book in this series was mostly set-up, but this one wasted no time getting to the fast-paced action and intrigue that had the feel of a later edtion Dresden book, and it carried that momentum to the very last pages. And while this series is not The Dresden Files, Jim Butcher shows that he still knows how to beat up his main character without mercy or remorse. Tavi spent most of this book in the epicenter of serious conflict, and he did so with little or no sleep, multiple minor injuries, and possibly a concussion. The other supporting characters were also neck deep in disastrous conflicts of their own, and the pages of this book flew by without effort.
In typical Butcher fashion, the series seems to be getting better with each book. Character development continues to be realistic and engaging, the plot is complex but not confusing, and the ending offers the glimpse of a twist (although I wasn't totally surprised to see it coming) that will significantly impact the remainder of the series. These books have a lot of heart and are tons of fun to read. Other than the continuation of some careless typos, I have no real complaints.
