Detectives Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska are called out on a New Years Eve murder. A teenage girl's body popped out of the trunk of a car after hitting a pothole. Not only is she hit by the next car on the freeway, but her body has been burned with acid and stabbed repeatedly. It looks like a serial killer named Doc Holiday has struck again. Kovac and Liska work to discover who the teenager is and where she came from. They find that unlike most of Doc Holiday's victims, she is a local girl and a friend of Liska's son, Kyle. As the Detectives question Kyle and the last people who saw Penelope Gray, Kovac and Liska begin to think they may be looking at the wrong suspect.

I was so glad to see Kovac and Liska back for another book. Hoag gives us a gripping storyline that kept me glued to the book. My only problem is it felt the book ended abruptly...like the author was in a hurry to wrap up the story. My rating: 4 Stars.

THE 9TH GIRL was the July 2015 pick in my online book club, The Reading Cove.

Fantastic read!

Man, it's not easy finding high quality police procedurals that tell a well-written, well-plotted story that doesn't use gore gratuitously, for shock value. (ahem, Karin Slaughter)

THE 9TH GIRL hooked me from the word go and I couldn't put the book down until I reached the end and found out what the heck happened! There were several LOL moments and witty one-liners, I totally loved the dialogue and banter among the cops.

Usually, I get itchy fingers and can't resist the urge to skip the (boring) police investigation (yawn), hop right to the end and find out whodunnit, but Tami Hoag has created some really well developed characters in homicide detectives Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska! Even though I haven't read the other books in the series, as I read along in this story, it felt as if I knew them and I wanted to go along step-by-step as they worked to solve the grotesque murder of a teenaged girl on New Years Eve.

Now, I will say that I feel the plot may have rather conveniently had them overlook one of those steps in order to prolong things a bit, but not enough to keep this from being a quality murder mystery. I highly recommend it! A-

I enjoyed this book but not as much as some of her other ones. Quite long and I felt it took quite a few chapters to get to the story line. Still an interesting read...

On an ice-shrouded New Year's Eve, a minor car accident becomes a nightmare when the mutilated body of a young woman is ejected from the trunk of one of the cars. Unravelling who she was and what happened to her drives this thriller. Hoag continues to play her extremely skillful bait-and-switch game with readers, but this one feels a bit padded and drags somewhat in the latter half.

Another great Hoag book. Characters who are familiar in a different scene. Adds a new level to the excitement of New Year's Eve! Enjoy!

Several twists and turns will keep the reader interested; however, my anger over the parents (including Det. Nikki Liska) nonparenting and their inability to discipline or enforce such discipline to the next generation, which helps to perpetrate today's mess we call society, really took away from the enjoyment of this novel.

What a disappointment! This very noir book is narrated by David Colacci who reads in a perfect style to convey the darkness of the piece. Gratuitous, graphic gore added to my personal distaste, although I recognize others may like it. I understand the necessity of character development, but the preachy nature of Hoag's long and redundant side steps into the personal natures of the characters droned on and on in what seemed to be a lame attempt to make it a l-o-n-g book. I skipped and skipped passages trying to become interested. I finally gave up after disc 5 of this 11-disc CD, even though I understand that the denouement is supposed to be a big surprise. I am surprised enough by this boring book! I've read negative criticisms and glowing reviews of this book on Amazon and cannot understand the 5 star reviews. To each his own. I don't agree and this is not Hoag's best effort by a long shot!

This wasn't one of Hoag's better books. It was a decent story but it was repetitive and slow.
