This book was just o.k to me. It was slow reading. I didn't get interested in it until the last 50 pages. Did not like the ending at all.

I have yet to read a Matthew Scudder book that isn't better than the last. You just can't help but care about the character and all the things that happen to him and around him. No doubt, this is dark stuff. But in many ways its uplifting. Yes, there are 8 million ways to die. But there are also 8 million ways to live.

Matthew Scudder knows how far down a person can sink. A young prostitute named Kim wanted out. Maybe Kim didn't deserve the life. She surely didnt deserve death. The alcoholic turned p.i. was to protect her, but someone slashed her on a crumbling waterfront pier. Finding Kim's killer will be Scudder"s penance. Lethal secrets hiding in the slain hooker's past that are far dirtier than her life. Many ways of dying in this cruel and dangerous town -- some quick and brutal ... and slow.
