Great book! As a professional I work with individuals who are mentally ill on a daily basis but it was great to see the perspective and frustrations from the parent's point of view. Very well written and hard to put down.

This book is very well written. They story was alittle slow for my taste, but the author did a good job of detailing bipolar disorder and how it takes a hold of not just the person but also the family. I suffer from bipolar disorder and the details were right on for someone that doesn't take her medicine consistently.

True mental illness is something not easily understood unless you have experienced it in your life. The late author Bebe Moore Campbell does a stunning job conveying the ups and downs, the hopes and tragedies, the emotional roller coaster, and the heartbreak of dealing with her daughter, who has a very serious case of bipolar disorder.
This is one of the most well-written novels I have read on this subject. I highly recommend it.

This was a really good book that gave a look into what parents go through when an adult child is sick. Also shows that parents will go to any length to protect their kids.

Wow, that was good. Ms Campbell is an excellent writer and the book was a real page-turner. She really expresses how frustrating it is to fight our horrible mental health system while trying to help a sick loved one.

The author of this book took a real look at our medical community and how lacking our system is for those with psych. disorders. I think it is a well written book. I think I would have enjoyed the book alot more if the language was not so brass in places. It seemed to me the author used profanity when it certainly was not needed to get the point across. I certainly found myself rooting for the mother.

Very moving story about a family dealing with mental illness.
I read this book with relish because thus far it is the only book I've found that talks of the difficulty (impossibility at times!) of getting loved ones treatment for a mental illness. An illness that makes them look, and even at times, sound like "normal" people, yet they have a disease that affects their behavior and judgement, one that wreaks havok if untreated, in the lives of both the patient themselves and everyone around them.
This book disappointed me in that it went off into a total fantasy about an underground, parallel treatment possibility that so many of us wish existed but does not.
No one but the relatives and loved ones of the mentally ill will be interested in this book and it gives us no hope, or even mild entertainment, really, though at times I identified with the mother and cheered her on.
I was saddened by Bebe Moore Campbell's death as I looked forward to mature work from her.

I loved this because I believed it enriched my compassion. Very well done - made me a witness to the struggle of mental illness. I don't think I'll ever hear about people who have this in their lives and feel the same as I did. That is the best goal for a story and a great reason to read or listen.
