A nationwide cross-section of 60 firms opened their books to share financial operating and performance statistics so we could compare and contrast a wide variety of types and sizes of environmental firms. Each participant supplied their most recent fiscal year-end balance sheet and income statement data, revenue and profit histories and projections, plus information on contracts, liability insurance and more. Detailed analysis of over 20 of the must know financial yardsticks for consulting firms, including profitability, chargeability, labor multipliers, backlog, and various balance sheet ratios. For each statistic, firms are compared by size, firm type, region, growth rate and, client base. Personnel and other costs are examined in detail and benchmarked to revenues, total costs, number of employees, and other measures. We explore the growth/decline in revenues, profits, and profitability for environmental consulting firms over the past three years. We look at projections for revenue growth in the next three, five, and ten years.
