I'm not impressed. Certainly, there must be editing to select a mere 1,000 places from the whole world. Unfortunately, once the author hits the obvious places she tends to highlight the high end hotels, restaurants and resorts over the really interesting places. For Illinois, she picked Charlie Trotter's and for Wisconsin, the American Club in Kohler. In a generation or two those could be mere historical blips.

It's a thick book full of helpful information about various places around the globe. Granted I'm not going to visit all 1,000 places mentioned in the book, but it's a nice starting point for those interested in domestic and/or international travel. This is an excellent reference, but if you're planning a trip to one of these places, you'll want to get a travel guide devoted just to that country. This book is not meant to be such a guide. I'm sure some people will wonder why the author picked town x or over town y, but such subjective criticism is to be expected anytime someone compiles a book like this. We all have our own ideas of where others should visit, but the overall selection of locations is very good.

This book is a good resource if you're ever planning a trip somewhere. It's not a practical travel book - meaning it doesn't provide information about hotels, restaurants, etc. It just talks about all the different sights to see around the world.
A great resource for anyone who likes to travel. Very helpful.

This is a fun book that many visitors to my house also enjoyed as it sat on my mantle for a while. Places from all over the world are reviewed- some out of the way and some common. I had a great time browsing through it and dreaming of places to go, and also reading about the places I had been, comparing my thoughts to the authors. Great fun!

For those of you with a checklist view of life, and can't make up your own mind. It would seem to be something Newsweek readers would enjoy. There are a lot of the usual places you've heard of, and then supposedly great restaurants and such (high end, of course). Pretty much places all over the world, although more in the US. You may want to get out of the car or spa a few times while checking these off. This is the first edition of the list.
