As a fan of Jan Karon books, this little book, Esthers Gift A Mitford Christmas Story, is a treasure.
The OMC (orange marmalade Cake) and the baker Esther is a recurring feature of the Mitford series that has always made me smile.

One of the very best of the Thoene's writings. The insight into Jewish life under Roman rule, the corruption and hypocrisy of power hungry authorities are so like the same power hungry people in the world today.
But, the best part of it is God's relationship with Peniel, the blind young man, his family struggles, his need to be loved and Peniel's hunger and thirst for God's Word and history. Also, catching up with other characters in the previous books and comparing the Thoene's descriptions of Jesus and His earthly walk. I have read it three times. I gave one away a few years ago and ordered another here, because I just had to read it again.

I put off getting this book for quite awhile, thinking I would be critical of the perspective the author might take. But then, I thought, I have always liked the original perspectives that the Thoene's take. I will trust them and I was right. Loved it and am doing the study at the end, which I usually do not do. Definitely a good read!

As usual, the story, the characters and the research all combine to make a fantastice book that creates a desire to know what happens next.

The Story line was interesting. I found it hard to relate to the characters. The history woven in was the most compelling.

The continuation of the Shiloh community and its inhabitants with the focus on Birch and Trudy's family is true to the history of the period and the area. The compelling characters against the Thoene's foundation in research is once again a great part of what keeps the characters human.
