2.5 and no more sadly. Anyone know when the sequel will be out? Because a sequel will be out. Is there an author out there who can write a good book with an actual ending? This, in itself, doesn't really affect my opinion or rating although it is getting rather annoying always reading books that never end.
On to this book..... let's talk about editing. Or, lack of editing. This book lacks editing. I don't think it actually saw anyone who edited it. I'm starting to think some authors are using ficticious "editing services" just to make others think the book has been through the proper channels. I'll say it again, I'd be mortified if my name and photo were affiliated with a work that was so lacking in such basic editing. Mortified. There is no reason for it. And it's unexcusable. We would not be okay with a DVD that skips throughout the movie. We wouldn't be okay with a car that broke down on the road all day every day. Why must we read books that have mistakes on every page? How can I actually recommend this to someone? I can't. I won't. It is far too easy to make sure a book is properly edited in this day and age. Authors have tons of dedicated readers and they could find one (or a few) and have it done cheap and well. But they don't, for whatever reason. I can't be so forgiving.
Allow me:
"tare" used instead of "tear" on pg. 81.
Pg. 197 - "They walked over to the ramp and looked at the water from the harbor. Jason didn't go too close having been afraid of water all his life. Still, Baltimore city was a sexy ass city."
Huh? Not wanting to remark on too many things I'll just choose one. What the hell does B-More being a "sexy ass city" have anything to do with this guy being scared of some water? Someone tell me.
Pg. 205 - Nyzon's "mother" is coming clean and she tells him she's always been unable to get pregnant. Next paragraph - "After seeing how the pregnancy effected him...." Again, huh? And again, not wanting to remark on too many things I'll choose one. Do I have to actually type it out? How did a pregnancy effect him if she never got pregnant?
Pg. 211 - "blaring threw the speakers". Hmmmm.
(this is a good one) Pg. 238 - "....unzippened her dress...." (I have nothing to say about this.)
Pg. 247 (THIS is my personal favorite) "He cocked his arm back and hit her so hard, the bottom tooth flew out of his mouth." (Now, I've been in a few fights in my day and I have never... ever.... ever... punched someone so hard MY tooth flew out. Conversely, no one has ever punched me and lost their own tooth. This is amazing in and of itself to me.
Pg. 267 - "He rubbed his knuckles carless about whom he had just hurt." His knuckles were carless. Okay.
This is the thing - a book should be of better quality if you want me to spend my money on it. Especially when an author wants $15.00 for a book I'll read once. Maybe, if the authors out there put more of a quality product out, maybe people would be more willing to spend money on them. As it is, I won't pay for certain books. I'll get them from friends, other places, etc. but I will not waste my money. I have no problem buying Jodi Picoult's books when they first come out for close to about $30.00 though. Because the quality is there. I don't have to work to read it. I shouldn't have to.
Um, the rest of the book. I liked the characters for the most part. Pretty well developed. There were parts that didn't make a lot of sense. Why is Beliza such an important part of the book? Her character gave exactly nothing to the story. Why so much about Todd, William, etc. when they're barely mentioned later and didn't do much for the book when they were starring?
There were tons more mistakes that I haven't mentioned, all kinds. I'm disappointed because of all I've heard about Styles and her other books. My expectations were high and they weren't met. I thought, given what I'd heard, that they were justified being that high. I have some other books by her already and I'll probably read them at some point. I won't be in a rush though.
Hopefully, another book in the future will bring it back.
