I enjoyed the book overall. It was an interesting alternate reality of our earth with countries and past events bent into an alternative narrative. The world was convincing as long as you ignored the engineering / physics impossibilities. The main character was deeply religious and a few too many things were explained just by his faith. The author made an interesting choice in that he created an overtly sexist world (including the inner dialogue of the main character), but went out of his way to make the female characters competent. That said there were entirely too few female characters - something like three total and only one at a time. It fails the Bechtel test.
